Pinhole Leaks in Copper Water Lines: Patch the Spot or Replace the Pipe?
A pinhole is exactly that: a hole about the size of a pin in a copper water pipe, usually from corrosion working outward from inside the pipe. In a wall it might spray a fine mist that stains drywall. Under a slab it can leak quietly for months. Either way, it rarely shows up alone.

What causes pinholes
Pinholes start as small pits on the inside wall of the pipe. Several things are linked to that pitting:
- Water chemistry. Certain combinations of pH, minerals and disinfectants can be harder on copper.
- Flow speed. Water moving fast through elbows and tees can wear the pipe wall from inside.
- Soldering flux. Excess flux left inside pipes when they were installed can keep corroding the copper for years.
- Pipe wall thickness. Some installations used thinner-walled copper, which leaves less metal to lose.
- Abrasion. Under a slab, the outside of the pipe can wear where it presses against concrete or rock.
Which of these applies to your house is something a plumber can judge by looking at the pipe they cut out.
Where pinholes show up
In walls: bubbling paint, a damp patch on drywall, a hiss behind a fixture, or a musty smell.
In ceilings: a drip or stain below a bathroom or a line in the attic.
Under the slab: the same signs as any slab leak. The meter moves with everything off, a floor spot is damp or warm, or you hear water. See signs of a slab leak and slab leak detection.
Patch or replace?
| Situation | Usual direction |
|---|---|
| First pinhole, pipe around it looks sound | Cut out the bad section and replace it |
| Second or third pinhole on the same run | Replace that whole run |
| Pinholes in several rooms | Talk about a whole-house repipe |
| Pinhole under the slab | Spot repair or a reroute |
A repair clamp is a temporary stop, not a fix. It buys time until the pipe can be replaced properly.
Why pinholes come in clusters
The conditions that caused the first hole, whether water chemistry, flow speed or the pipe itself, act on every foot of copper in the house. A plumber who finds one pinhole will often look at the cut-out section and see thinning or pitting nearby. That's why the second pinhole is usually the point where people start asking whether patching is still worth it.
Pinholes in older Westminster-area homes
Copper water lines were standard in the houses built across Westminster, Midway City and north Huntington Beach in the post-war decades. After that many years, pinholes are a common complaint. Why older Orange County homes get slab leaks covers the bigger picture, and slab leaks and homeowners insurance covers claims. The main slab leak repair page compares repair choices.
Questions callers ask
Can I fix a pinhole leak myself?
A repair clamp can slow a leak on a pipe you can reach until a plumber arrives. It's a stopgap. A pinhole under the slab needs a plumber to find and repair it.
Do pinholes mean my water is bad?
Not necessarily. Water chemistry is one factor among several. Ask the plumber what they see in the pipe, and look at your water provider's annual water quality report if you're curious.
Are pinhole leaks covered by insurance?
It depends on the policy. Damage from a sudden leak is often treated differently from the pipe repair. See the insurance post linked on this page.
